Academic Advising

Readmitted Students

Students who have been readmitted by the Office of the Dean of Undergraduates are directed to contact the Office of Academic Advising. In some cases, a detailed academic plan (.DOC) already has been approved, and the Office of Academic Advising can:

  1. Help modify the academic plan based on recommendations by the Committee on Examinations and Standing;
  2. Notify the Office of the Registrar to remove the registration “advising hold”;

Students returning from a leave of absence often are readmitted before developing a detailed academic plan. However, these students will have an “advising hold,” which prevents registration until after the academic plan is approved by the Office of Academic Advising. It is suggested that each readmitted student contacts the Office of Academic Advising as early as possible to allow time to develop an academic plan. Understandably, some readmitted students feel anxious about the timing of academic planning and registration for specific courses. However, if communication with the Office of Academic Advising and careful academic planning are promptly conducted, the entire process can be relatively efficient.

When contacting the Office of Academic Advising by phone (4060), each student should indicate the following:

  1. Status as a readmitted student
  2. Matriculation term (first semester at Rice)
  3. Last semester at Rice
  4. Rice e-mail
  5. Non-Rice e-mail (if appropriate)
  6. Phone number
  7. Whether you would like an appointment or circumstances necessitate e-mail correspondence and why (e.g., work, travel, job, etc.)
